Start When Safe: Shift the Paradigm Around Safeguards – 2025 Summit Session
Do you know when it is safe to start work or when to stop work when an accident occurs?
Stop Work is designed to empower workers to STOP when they encounter hazards. However, we often see incidents occur when a hazard goes unnoticed or becomes accepted as normal. These programs constantly chase after workers to accomplish their jobs and always be on the lookout for danger. In the heat of the work, people’s ability to recognize risk change is low.
If you try looking left and right simultaneously, you end up cross-eyed.
We need to shift the paradigm from stopping when unsafe to starting when safe. This talk will look into how you can change the conversation of safety from missed risk identification to empowering control of energy with safeguards. Start When Safe encourages workers to take a safer approach to doing the work by verifying that essential safeguards are in place.
