You could say he’s a legitimate risk-taker

As a NASA astronaut, a captain in the U.S. Navy, an aviator, a test pilot, and an aerospace engineer, Jim Wetherbee has dealt with plenty of hazardous situations and unforgiving environments in his 35-year career.

Wetherbee is passionate about helping leaders and operators perform successfully. You’ll feel that passion come through in his presentations at the Global TapRooT® Summit.

Among his accomplishments, Wetherbee is:

  • the only American astronaut to have commanded five spaceflight missions;
  • a veteran of six Space Shuttle missions;
  • the only person to have landed the Space Shuttle five times;
  • the commander of two missions to the Russian Space Station, Mir, and two missions to the International Space Station;
  • past Director, Flight Crew Operations, specifically selected to improve the flight and ground safety in the astronaut corps;

and he can tell you what it took to get the first astronauts around the Moon and back. After the Columbia accident, Wetherbee was selected to enhance the safety aspects in the organizational culture at the Johnson Space Center, home of NASA’s human space flight program.

You’re going to want to hear Jim Wetherbee at the 2020 Global TapRooT® Summit

Wetherbee took his experience and expertise as a former NASA executive and astronaut to the oil and gas industry, serving as a Safety and Operations Auditor for BP. Four years later, he was selected as a VP for Operating Leadership. In this role, he supported efforts to improve performance results consistently over the long-term, by emphasizing effective leadership behaviors as a key way to influence and inspire people to conduct safe and high-quality operations.

In his presentations at the Summit, you’ll hear Jim talk about lessons learned from his experiences in aerospace, aviation, oil & gas, and similar dangerous industries. His book, Controlling Risk–In a Dangerous World, has a goal-defining subtitle:

30 Techniques for Operating Excellence: How to Predict and Prevent the Next Accident and Improve Performance and Productivity in Hazardous Operations, Business, and Everyday Life.

Essentially, Wetherbee’s book is the techniques of operating excellence, based on principles he created at NASA to help astronauts accomplish missions, operate with the highest quality, and prevent all accidents, including unpredictable ones.

Simply stated, attend the 2020 Global TapRooT® Summit and learn from Jim Wetherbee—and his Controlling Risk book—about what to do to improve human performance. His Keynote presentation, Controlling Risk in a Dangerous World, will be geared to help managers and employees understand how “principles-based techniques” can supplement “rules-based procedures.” Wetherbee describes it as, “This is what good operators do when they are working in the field in a high-quality way.”
