Industrial Explosion, Imperial Sugar Refinery

In February 2008, 14 employees were killed and 36 injured by an industrial explosion at the Imperial Sugar Refinery in Port Wentworth, Georgia.
An investigation into the industrial explosion at the Imperial Sugar Refinery revealed that the cause was an ignition of combustible sugar dust within the facility’s handling and packaging areas. The buildup of dust had not been properly cleaned and investigators found more than 100 safety violations in the refinery.
