Are Your Company Leaders “United in Service”?

I recently received a work inbox email from the United Way of Knoxville bearing the subject line “United in Service.”
Since countless workplace incidents are shared during TapRooT® Root Cause Analysis Training Courses and we at TapRooT® RCA are in the business of training companies to be proactive in keeping their employees safe, I felt motivated to give the email a quick read.
Something about the emphasis on “service” in regard to watching out for your employees compelled me to read further: “A healthy community starts with healthy leaders! According to the Center for Effective Philanthropy’s 2024 State of Nonprofits report, 95% of nonprofit leaders surveyed noted some level of concern about burnout among their staff. The needs in our community and the nonprofit landscape are transforming before our eyes but, as leaders, we must remember to create environments for our teams that prevent burnout and prioritize mental health to make an impact in our community long term.
“Here are some proven, low-cost strategies you can begin implementing with your team.
“Set Realistic Boundaries: Establish reasonable work hours and respect off hours to recharge, clarify which projects are priority, and set the example – use your PTO, turn off your notifications and resist the urge to check your email on vacation!
“Staff Care: Create opportunities for self-care techniques such as breathwork, stretches, or walks throughout the week. Encourage mental breaks and balancing workloads among your team. Consider implementing “no meeting” days, and if possible, offer flexible hours or remote working options!
“Lean into Community: Most importantly, connect with your support network! Connection is essential to feeling supported, so remember to create space to connect with your team, nonprofit peers, family and friends!”
Whether your company is nonprofit or otherwise, the message above reminded me of the words of Barb Carr, a trainer here at System Improvements, in a post she wrote about highway workers, “Our hearts are with all those who risk their lives and work on our roads every day. If you are struggling to solve problems, please consider joining us for an upcoming 2-Day TapRooT® Root Cause Analysis Essentials Course where you can bring an incident to analyze for root causes to ensure it doesn’t happen again. You’ll leave the course with knowledge about how to proactively use TapRooT® Root Cause Analysis to analyze near-misses and potentially save someone’s life, as well as the knowledge to swiftly analyze incidents that occur and develop strong corrective actions.”
