World Maritime Day

September 24th is World Maritime Day, a day set aside by the International Maritime Organization to celebrate their pursuit of shipping safety, maritime security, and a protected marine environment.
Each World Maritime Day has its own theme, and this year’s theme is “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence.”
As vital as the shipping industry is to upholding the modern economy, this theme highlights how important good safety practices are to keeping that industry running smoothly.

High reliability programs protect everyone involved in them, but turning “policy into practice” can be more difficult than companies often expect. That is why we at System Improvements created the TapRooT® Root Cause Analysis system.
Much of creating a high reliability program requires companies to utilize human performance expertise and create a safety culture.
An understanding of human performance often makes the difference between vague policies that no one follows and best practices that everyone on board intuitively understands. It does this by making work easy for employees to do right, and difficult for them to do wrong, through focusing on the places where our systems break down.
Often, breakdowns are blamed on employee error, deteriorating the workplace trust necessary for a safety culture. A truly good system achieves high reliability by removing blame from the equation, and aiming to understand why errors are made in the first place.

In the shipping industry, where the systems in place are highly necessary to keep everyone on board safe, safety practices like these are more important than ever. That’s why, for this industry as well as many others, we’re here to help.
TapRooT® RCA is designed to help you and your company create safe and working systems without having to face disaster to reach them. If you’re interested in learning how to improve the system at your workplace, you can contact us for a free briefing here.
