Things Have To Change

I was going through old videos, clearing space on my phone, when I found a recording from the 2021 Global TapRooT® Summit in Knoxville. I found a picture and video of Jeff Gleason from Nine Energy Services, who was one of our keynote speakers.

This was a unique Summit, with more than half of the attendees participating virtually. The whole conference felt like a homecoming, since so many had not traveled in over a year.
Jeff told the story of the moment he realized things had to change in his organization.
“I can remember standing in my driveway because I didn’t want my wife to hear this conversation. We were working on our 5th accident in a day. That is no exaggeration, 5 accidents in one day. We couldn’t even get one accident entered into our software before they were calling me to report another one. And I remember the coordinator I was talking to asking, “Is this going to get better?” I said, well … it is going to change. If we still have a job come Monday, we are going to do something different.”
Hearing this message reminded me that change doesn’t come easily. It takes great courage, discipline, and commitment to make a change. Often, people talk of the need for change without ever starting the journey. They say, “I will reach out tomorrow to schedule a call or book that training.”
Well, the time is here, and the moment is now.
Continued Success or Passing Emotional Moment?
You might be wondering what happened after that moment in Jeff’s driveway.
As it happens, Nine Energy Services has been using TapRooT® since 2018 and has had two different Success Stories published in that time.
Their first Success Story, published in 2021, shows their dramatic decline in injuries over 4 years, from a TRIR of 1.44 to 0.3, and a drop in Lost Time Injuries from 11 to 0.
However, programs frequently fail during turmoil and leadership transitions. Their second Success Story discusses how they overcame the challenges presented in an ever-changing environment.
