Complexity … I’m Tired of It

Why Make Things Sound Complex
I was reading a performance improvement article the other day, and I felt like shouting:
“Stop Making Things Sound COMPLEX!”
Let me give you some examples of the words they used…
- They had a “taxonomy.”
- They had a “workflow.”
- They used “advanced analytics.”
- Their “methodology” used “integrated solutions” that provided “strategic advantages.”
They used a hodgepodge of buzzwords to make something that should be simple sound complex.
The TapRooT® Advantage
In TapRooT® Root Cause Analysis, we take the complex and make it simple. So simple that your head doesn’t need to hurt just to understand what you are doing. So simple that everyone can find the causes of human performance issues.
We started by developing an advanced yet simple definition of root cause (see how it was developed HERE).
ROOT CAUSE
A Root Cause is
the absence of a best practice
or the failure to apply knowledge
that would have prevented the problem.
Then we developed a process (actually two processes) and techniques to find root causes. A fairly simple TapRooT® 5-Step Process for most investigations…

Note that for very simple investigations, you can STOP if there is nothing more to learn. This is the ultimate simplicity in an incident investigation.
For major investigations, we have a slightly more complex 7-Step TapRooT® Process…

Both processes use easy-to-use tools. We took Einstein’s advice and made the techniques:
“…as simple as possible, but not simpler.”
The techniques have embedded complex expert knowledge of incident investigation, human factors, and equipment reliability. So, the complexity and expert systems are in TapRooT® RCA – they just aren’t complex or hard to understand for the user.
We then created training and software that help people understand and effectively use the techniques.
The training has been praised by hundreds of thousands of trainees from around the world, including:
- incident investigators,
- safety VPs, directors, managers, and specialists,
- operators,
- quality professionals,
- mechanics,
- operations and maintenance managers,
- C-suite leaders,
- Six-Sigma black belts,
- lean facilitators,
- risk managers,
- equipment reliability professionals,
- Operational excellence experts and continuous improvement managers,
- food safety specialists,
- engineers,
- CAPA program leaders,
- doctors, nurses, and patient safety professionals at hospitals,
- process safety experts,
- organization effectiveness leaders,
- pilots and flight safety professionals,
- government regulators, and
- union representatives.
And that’s just a sample. Students say the training is engaging, practical, and fun. They report that what they learn is very useful when returning to work. See some of their Success Stories HERE.
We have a 2-Day TapRooT® Root Cause Analysis Course for those who mainly investigate the low-risk incidents, a 3-Day Virtual TapRooT® Root Cause Analysis Course for those who can’t attend our face-to-face training, and a 5-Day TapRooT® Advanced Root Cause Analysis Team Leader Course for people who want to be experts in root cause analysis to investigate serious, high-impact incidents.
To see the dates and locations of our public TapRooT® Courses, CLICK HERE.

And be assured that TapRooT® Training will work for you and your employees because it is GUARANTEED:
Attend a TapRooT® Course. Go back to work and use what you have learned. If you don’t find root causes that you previously would have overlooked, and if you and your management don’t agree that the corrective actions that you recommend are much more effective, just return your course materials, and we will refund the entire course fee.
A usable, advanced root cause analysis system and great training aren’t all we offer. We also have the patented TapRooT® Software. This was the first root cause analysis software and has been continuously improved for 35 years. See the TapRooT® Software history HERE. And watch the video below for a 3-minute overview of the software.
Don’t Be Fooled by Complex Descriptions
Do you really want an advanced analytics workflow that includes a systematic taxonomy? A methodology utilizing integrated solutions providing strategic advantages? Or would you rather find root causes and prevent repeat problems? One uses industry buzzwords to sound needlessly complex. One (the TapRooT® Root Cause Analysis System) makes the complex simple and has been proven by industry leaders around the world. It’s your choice.
