The Damascus Titan Missile Explosion of 1980 was a catastrophic event that happened near Damascus, Arkansas, on September 18, 1980. The explosion was triggered by a ruptured fuel tank during routine maintenance, leading to the release of highly toxic and explosive rocket fuel.
The explosion resulted in the launch facility’s destruction and the loss of one crew member’s life, with several others sustaining injuries. It remains one of the most serious incidents in the history of the United States’ intercontinental ballistic missile program, highlighting the inherent risks associated with handling and maintaining nuclear weapons.
