A New Year Brings New Beginnings & New Goals
•••
It’s that time of year: Have you started thinking about the new year, new beginnings, and goals?
Yikes! It’s already November! That means it is time to start filling in your calendar for 2020. People tend to think about personal goals and changes when they start making their new year resolutions, but what about your professional career?
What are your work goals for 2020?
How can you improve your work? Or, even possibly receive that promotion you’ve been wanting? Which to-do list items, sought-after achievements, or missed opportunities have you spent 2019 thinking about . . . but conveniently left on the back burner?
The importance of setting goals
Work goals are essential because they help us create a solid foundation to achieve quotas, meet management expectations, and help us complete the things we want to succeed at professionally. The best metaphor for goals is, “We need goals in our lives, just as much as a captain needs a compass to navigate the high seas.”
Without clearly defined goals, it is easy to lose sight of what you are working toward. It can lead to failure and steer you in the wrong direction. If you don’t set goals the right way, it becomes unclear what the right path is.
The lack of defined goals tends to sap our positivity and hopefulness. Think of it as creating a lost feeling or perpetuating a vacuum within ourselves. As a result, we become frustrated, not seeing any results from our hard work.
Failure is not an option
When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, people tend to set themselves up for failure. They fall into the trap of New Year’s Syndrome, which sees us setting goals once per year, then essentially forgetting about them. A study from the University of Scranton in 2014 indicated that a mere 8 percent of people achieve their New Year’s goal. Sixty-four percent of resolution-makers carry their determination past the first month; 46 percent make it six months; and, astonishingly, 8 percent make it through to achievement.
Have you fallen into this trap of goal-setting at work? Are you tired of not setting goals the right way, or only setting them once a year? Have you implemented Safeguards at work that do not work? Maybe management has cut your budget in the past, or do people bypass Safeguards you worked so hard on only to be ignored? If so, this is where TapRooT® can help you. Built into our root cause analysis methodology is a great goal-planning tool called SMARTER.
How can TapRooT® & SMARTER help with Your goals?
SMARTER is a great tool that helps you put into place achievable and realistic goals while tracking their progress
We have built the SMARTER methodology right into our software! Our systematic process makes it easy for you to set goals and implement safeguards that are effective and realistic. This step-by-step goal-setting strategy helps you achieve any goal you set.
What makes the SMARTER technique so special is that it takes you past the effort of just setting a goal or implementing a change. It makes you review your goals, and it adds a sense of measurement, which is crucial in achieving your goals. Most of us are great at coming up with a goal and ideas but fail to apply any measurement strategy or review process. If we don’t measure or track our goals and progress, it becomes a lot easier for us to put it off, or trick ourselves into thinking we are further along in our goals than what we have truly accomplished. Since this methodology is built right into our software, it automatically helps you focus on SMARTER techniques to help track your success and see measurable results.
You might be asking yourself, “What does SMARTER stand for?” It is an acronym that stands for…
(S)pecific
(M)easurable
(A)ccountable
(R)easonable
(T)imely
(E)ffective
(R)eviewed
