Tis the Season for Communication Safety!

In this post, Vincent Phipps, M.A., CSP (Certified Speaking Professional), PhD (2026), reminds us of the power of connection and how important interpersonal communication skills are. Learn four great tips to overcome challenges.
As the year winds down and the holiday lights go up, accident investigators continue the critical work of uncovering what went wrong and helping others prevent it from happening again. December often brings festive gatherings, cheerful distractions, and a rushed pace, but it is also a season that reminds us of the power of connection. For investigators, strong public speaking and interpersonal communication skills can be the greatest gift you bring to your role.
Every investigation tells a story. Whether presenting findings to leadership, briefing frontline staff, or interviewing witnesses, investigators serve as interpreters of incidents that could have been avoided. Communicating with clarity, confidence, and compassion ensures that lessons learned are understood and applied. Like trimming a tree or wrapping a present, the details matter. Speaking too fast skips over vital information. Speaking too long loses your audience. Effective safety messaging is short enough to remember and strong enough to make a difference.
Interpersonal skills are equally essential. During the holidays, emotions can run high. People may be more stressed, fatigued, or distracted. When investigators listen actively and ask thoughtful questions, they uncover essential truths without making others feel blamed or defensive. Trust isn’t just earned, it’s demonstrated through every interaction.
4 Tips for Overcoming Communication Challenges
As you close out the year, consider this seasonal challenge:
- Be present when you speak. Your message matters.
- Spread clarity. Eliminate jargon and communicate in plain terms.
- Share empathy. Remember that every incident involves real people with real impact.
- Deliver your findings like a gift that is packed with value and intended to help.
This December, let your communication shine as brightly as the season’s lights. The more effectively accident investigators speak and connect, the safer the workplaces we protect will be now and into the new year ahead.
