I’m sure you’ve heard the cliché that people don’t leave bad jobs—they leave bad bosses, or something along those lines. Leadership is a topic that continually fills the shelves of any physical or virtual bookstore. Despite the countless resources available, the question remains: Why haven’t we figured out what makes a good leader? Leadership is a complex and multifaceted skill influenced by a range of factors, including personality, context, and the ability to manage emotions—both one’s own and those of others.

With an extensive collection of self-development books lining my shelves, featuring works from almost every notable author of the past century, I’ve immersed myself in exploring the nuances of leadership. Leadership principles from industry giants to safety experts are universally applicable yet often elusive. Let’s delve into what distinguishes good leaders from bad ones and how emotional intelligence can be the key to bridging the gap.

Traits of a Good Leader

  1. Empathy: A good leader understands the emotions, needs, and perspectives of their team members. Empathy allows leaders to connect on a human level, fostering trust and loyalty.
  2. Decisiveness: The ability to make quick, informed decisions is critical. A decisive leader can navigate uncertainty and provide clear direction, even in high-stakes situations.
