Incident Investigators Need Communication & Presentation Skills

Why Are Communication and Presentation Skills Critical for Safety & Quality Investigators?

At the core of an investigation is a skill – COMMUNICATION. And at the end of an investigation, investigators must communicate/present what they have discovered.

Your communications – words, timing, and tone – influence every stage of an investigation. For example:

Listening

Listening isn’t just about hearing facts. It’s about picking up on what’s said and unsaid. An investigator who truly listens builds trust, encourages openness, and uncovers critical details that a checklist alone won’t reveal.

Adapting

Adapting your communication style to suit diverse personalities, from distressed employees to skeptical managers, can mean the difference between defensiveness and cooperation. Knowing when to be direct, when to be empathetic, and how to read a room isn’t soft, it’s smart. This is especially true when presenting incident facts and corrective actions (CAPA) to management.

Responding

Responding with clarity, professionalism, and emotional intelligence reinforces your credibility and encourages positive change. Investigators who respond, rather than react, help teams move forward rather than getting stuck in blame.

Developing Your Communication and Presentation Skills

Communication/presentation isn’t a side skill; it’s a critical safety and quality tool. And like any tool, it can be sharpened.

One of the 11 pre-Summit Courses is the:
